Devastating flash floods have swept through regions in Nepal, destroying homes, vital infrastructure, and leaving hundreds missing. Communities urgently need food, clean water, medical aid, and shelter.

WHAT HAPPENED

On August 26, 2026, a catastrophic flash flood struck Nepal’s northern border region along the Bhote Koshi River, sweeping through communities near the Nepal–Tibet border. Homes, roads, bridges, power facilities and other infrastructure were destroyed or severely damaged.

Update

Search-and-rescue operations continue following the catastrophic flash floods that struck Nepal’s Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts. Reported figures are changing rapidly as responders reach isolated communities.

UNICEF reports that at least 17,000 children could face loss and displacement due to the flash floods. At least 389 people were reported killed in Nepal, including 14 children, while thousands remain missing.

Rescue Efforts Continue

Over 600+ individuals have been rescued so far. The Nepal Army has rescued 350 workers and residents who were trapped inside the Upper Trishuli hydropower tunnel. Search operations continue for those still missing across the affected region. However, the danger is not over. Red Cross volunteers remain on high alert over the possibility of secondary flooding from lakes formed behind flood debris. Nepal’s Himalayan rivers also feed several major river systems in India, raising concerns for downstream communities.

International Support Is Arriving

Governments and humanitarian organizations are mobilizing assistance:

  • The United Kingdom pledged £5 million.

  • The United States committed $500,000 and deployed a disaster-response adviser.

  • India sent emergency shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines.

  • China coordinated emergency supplies and financial assistance.

  • The European Union indicated that additional support is ready to be mobilized.

  • The Red Cross launched an approximately $31 million emergency appeal after releasing nearly $1.25 million for the immediate response.

The devastating Bhote Koshi flood in Rasuwa, Nepal, continues to worsen. According to the latest reports:

  • 389 deaths have been confirmed, while thousands are estimated to be missing.

  • 670 tourists are reported missing, including 327 women, 178 Indians, 127 Nepalis, 65 Americans, 35 Australians, and 25 Canadians.

  • Approximately 40 km of roadway in Rasuwa has been completely destroyed.

Satellite images indicate that a 0.11 sq. km lake has formed after the river was blocked. Authorities warn that the natural dam could still breach, potentially causing another major downstream flood. Communities remain on high alert.

This remains a rapidly changing emergency. Nepal Police reported that 167 bodies had been recovered in Nepal, while tourism officials reported that more than 400 tourists were missing, including approximately 340 foreign nationals. Authorities have warned that casualty and damage figures may change as communication is restored and rescue teams reach isolated communities

Initial Analysis
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority indicates that an ice-and-rock avalanche triggered a debris-filled flood in the Lhende River, northeast of the Nepal–China border crossing.

The resulting surge carried water, sediment and boulders through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Water levels downstream reportedly rose by as much as nine meters within approximately 30 minutes. The precise sequence and cause of the disaster remain under investigation.

Providing Support

ARC for Nepal is establishing a dedicated fund to support verified emergency relief and early recovery needs.

The Government of Nepal has established the Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund to support rescue, relief, and recovery efforts. Those wishing to help may donate through the government relief fund or through ARC for Nepal’s Nepal Flood Relief campaign.

All donations collected by ARC for Nepal for this campaign will be transferred in a lump sum to the Government of Nepal’s disaster relief fund.

Because conditions and needs are changing rapidly, final allocations will be based on verified assessments from affected communities and local response partners.
